The Greatest Showman: A Review

The Greatest Showman

A Review

I’m a bit late to the party with this movie. I wasn’t one of those who rushed to the cinema to see it. In fact, the first time I watched it was on the 28th of December 2018, well over a year after it was released. I’ll admit, I thought that there was a lot of hype, and I was worried that the movie wouldn’t live up to it, but I will also admit that I was wrong.

The movie is a biopic, following PT Barnum, as he goes from poor young boy, to a rich young man who follows his dreams, and although he gets a little lost along the way, he eventually realises that’s really important in life.

I won’t go into the plot much more here, because while a great number of people have seen it already, I am aware that some haven’t, and… spoilers.

This movie is one of the best I have seen in a long time. Hugh Jackman is superb as PT Barnum, and Zac Efron shows that he can be more than just a high school heart throb as Bailey. The so-called ‘freaks’ are a breath of fresh air, with not only emotional depth, but also a large amount of comedy to their characters.

I can’t finish this review without mentioning the soundtrack, which can only be described as epic! The songs are a genius piece of writing, especially “This is me”, a song of defiance sung by the ‘freaks’, which actually gave me shivers as I listened to it.

All in all, I loved this movie. If you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend that you see it. Even if you only agree to try it for the music, I honestly think you will find yourself moved and uplifted by the end of it.

Let me know what you think of it in the comments. All opinions are welcome here.

Adventures In Novelling 2

Adventures In Novelling

The Beginning

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know already that I’m a writer, and that I’ve been working on a novel for almost a year now.

I thought, as we’re at the start of a new year, and I am still working my way through Act Two of my novel, that it might be fun to document my adventures in the world of writing this book.

Call it a (sort of) reflective log, where I will share my struggles, and my successes, completely openly and honestly with you, because, at the end of the day, this is how we all learn. I know it’s how I’ve learned in the past, and I guess, part of me is hoping that I will also learn something in the process of this project.

I don’t know exactly what sort of form this will take, but I think maybe that’ll be part of the fun of it, so I ask you, do you want to come on the magical mystery tour that is my adventures in novelling?

Please feel free to leave a comment, and let’s get a discussion going….

Not Giving Up..

Not giving up..

And why it’s not the easy option…

by Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

Lately I’ve been in a real funk! It’s the kind of funk that I call ‘pure depression’, where I can’t even find a specific reason for it, I just wake up, feeling a bunch of yuckiness (yes, I know it’s a not a proper word… Microsoft Word told me with a red wavy line, but screw that line, I’m using it!).

The thing is, that when I wake up feeling like that, it is VERY hard to get myself motivated. It actually, genuinely feels exhausting and part of me really can’t be bothered to do anything other than curling into a ball and going back to sleep; a pseudo-hibernation, if you will… until the clouds clear and the sun peeps out once more.

However, doing this, I’ve found, is the single worst thing I can do for myself. I waste a large proportion of the day, doing nothing productive, and I find myself feeling even worse that I did before, because I’ve not done anything creative or productive, which just makes me into a failure.

I mean, I know that there are some times, when I need to listen to my body and my mind, but there are also other times, when I just simply need to give myself a good talking to, and then get up, and push through, and get on with things, because when it comes down to it, I know that all the while I am creating, I am not worthless.

So today, I will give myself that talking to, and I will get on with things, because in the end, I know that it’s good for me, even if it seems like the hardest option in the world sometimes.
